Piñon Elementary student wins reading prize

Sonja Lovitt, a sixth-grader at Piñon Elementary School in Santa Fe, took one of the top prizes in Gov. Susana Martinez’s Summer Reading Challenge, designed to encourage kids to read over the summer.

Participants had to submit reading logs for at least 12 books they read from mid-April through July of this year and write a short essay, “Why I Love New Mexico.”

There were 18 students across the state who completed the challenge, and their names were randomly drawn for the prizes.

Lovitt and her family will receive an all-expenses-paid vacation to Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Florida. Other top prize winners are Issac Begay, a first-grader at Animas Elementary School in Farmington, and Claire Lindstrom, a third-grader at Hope Christian School in Albuquerque.

Olivia Green, a student at the former Agua Fría Elementary School in Santa Fe, which has been replaced by the El Camino Real Academy, also won an award, as did Los Alamos students Grace Zie and Reyana Narnanjo, among others.

The prizes were made possible by the state of New Mexico and a number of partners.
